“Zen Do Kai is ‘training for strength together’—guided by responsibility, respect, and the continuous pursuit of personal and collective excellence.”

OUR STYLE

Firestorm Martial Arts is proudly part of Zen Do Kai, a dynamic ‘freestyle’ martial art created in the early 1970s by Soke Bob Jones.

For over fifty five years, Zen Do Kai has delivered practical, effective, and adaptable martial arts training across Australia. Designed for all ages, the system blends self-defence, sport, and recreation, offering something for every student—whether their focus is fitness, personal safety, or martial skill.

Although Zen Do Kai is grounded in traditional martial arts, it constantly evolves. Techniques and knowledge are drawn from the best systems worldwide, creating a well-rounded style that is both modern and practical. This philosophy—absorbing what is useful and refining it—has matured Zen Do Kai into one of the most comprehensive self-defence systems available today.

Classes at Firestorm cover far more than just punching and kicking. Students train in relaxation, stretching, balance, coordination, fitness, speed, and power, alongside traditional kata (forms) and contemporary self-protection strategies, including street survival skills and awareness. We also teach non-contact sporting concepts, giving students the opportunity to compete safely while developing discipline, respect, and confidence.

OUR CLUB

Firestorm Martial Arts first opened its doors in 1991 with just ten students training at a single venue. From those humble beginnings, we have grown into a strong and enduring dojo community, with many hundreds of students having passed through our doors over the years.

Even as we’ve evolved, we have never lost the spirit and enthusiasm that began over three decades ago. Our Bayswater dojo remains a family-friendly space where respect, encouragement, and positivity are at the heart of everything we do. Students not only train together but also support one another, creating bonds that extend well beyond the mats.

The name Firestorm was chosen deliberately. As a uniquely Australian phenomenon, a firestorm represents power, intensity, and resilience—qualities we aim to instil in every student. Like the storm that feeds on itself and grows stronger, we believe in nurturing inner strength, determination, and confidence so that our students can overcome challenges both on the mats and in everyday life.

At Firestorm Martial Arts, training is about more than martial arts—it’s about building character, resilience, and community.
